Learning to Love the Mundane
It’s the small moments, you know
I think we search for and expect so many extraordinary moments in our lives, which just sets up for for extreme failure.
Yes, there will be times in our lives when there is immense pleasure, joy, and happiness; and there are also times when there is extreme sadness, depression, and grief.
But what about all the in-between times?
These are the moments that extend past happiness or sadness.
These are the moments that are mundane and ordinary;
the moments when you’re picking your children up from school or taking your cat to the vet for a routine visit;
these are the moments when you’re lying in bed or on the couch dissociating from life and watching TV.
These mundane moments are the breadth of our lives,
whether we want to think they are or not;
whether we are consumed with boredom or not.
These are the moments that ARE our lives.
The ups and downs, the happiness and sadness, those are the novelties.
It’s the in-between moments that sustain the makeup of our lives, which means we better start being okay with being alone or just in our own company.
We need to become comfortable with the lack of extremes.
The beauty of life does not lie in the extremes but in becoming comfortable with the mundane.
